According to the US State Departments website, Mexico should be avoided as a destination for travel. The site offers the general mix of safety suggestions; travel in groups, be aware of your surroundings, etc. This is coming on the heels of ever increasing violence and killings that the police, Mexican army cannot stop. Currently, Mexico’s border towns are lawless but the perpetrators thought to be drug gangs know that hurting or destroying Mexico’s multi-billion dollar tourism industry has a greater impact than the killings of police, soldiers, and civilians.
Surfinjaco.com and many other sites have seen a huge increase in visitors seeking information about Costa Rica. Most are concerned with the violence in places like Cancun, Cozemel, and Mazatlan where they would typically spend their college spring break. Students are increasingly searching for safer destinations for their spring break and are choosing Costa Rica. Just when the global economy was putting further pressure on the tourism industry here in Costa Rica, it is actually grabbing another niche travel market.
Spring break destinations generates more than 60% of hotels, bars, and vendors sales for the entire year during the 21 day period when the majority of college students have a break in their studies. University Dean’s at University of Arizona, Notre Dame, and others have prohibited students from arranging group travel plans to Mexico. One Dean was quoted off the record, “…violence in Mexico is not the main issue but it is the inability of the Mexican government to stem its flow into urban areas” , “…tourist towns are prime targets for drug gangs to make political statements by murdering and kidnapping foreign tourist to further weaken the credibility of the Mexican government.” Many schools and even parents of spring breakers are offering incentives to travel to other destinations such as Costa Rica.
While Costa Rica does not have the tourism infrastructure equal to Mexico but it has something Mexicans lack. Costa Rica has peaceful countrysides, beach towns, and political stability. The majority of spring breakers who choose Costa Rica come here to surf and play in the sun. This year Costa Rica is seeing a large increase in such niche travel and was totally blindsided by the opportunity. Surfinjaco.com contacted 10 travel agencies in Costa Rica and asked of their sale representatives were highlighting Costa Rica as a safe alternative to Mexico. All but one said they did not consider that as a selling point. On the other hand, we contacted 10 US based travel companies and asked the same question. All o offered alternatives because of the violence in Mexico but Costa Rica was just one alternative offered not the main.
