A Veteran’s Advice for Your Costa Rica Wedding

Costa Rica: The Perfect Wedding Destination.

Whether you want to an add an exotic touch to your big day, or have fallen for a Costa Rican and are planning your wedding in the country, you couldn’t have chosen a better place to get married! Costa Rica is a stunning location for a wedding, with your choice of volcano, cloud forest, rainforest or beach as the event’s perfect backdrop. Those being just a few benefits, Katie High, Project Manager of Costa Rican Vacations, lets us in on the others along with some caveats for the first-time wedding planner.

Katie relocated from her native Waynesville, North Carolina to live in Costa Rica in 2005. On May 3rd 2008, she married Alfonso Straffon, her Tico partner of almost three years. The wedding took place in La Mariposa Hotel, located in beautiful Manuel Antonio on the Pacific Coast. Having initially met at the gym, Alfonso sweetly offered to help Katie home with her grocery bags, as Katie feigned a sore back from an extended workout. The plan worked like magic and “the rest”, Katie says, “is history!”

La Mariposa, an outstanding Costa Rica resort famed for its 270 degree ocean views, offered several different venue choices to the beaming, loved-up couple: alongside the restaurant area, at the swimming pool’s edge or right down on the beach itself. Wanting to avoid sand-in-perfect-wedding-dress dilemmas, Katie and Alfonso opted for the first. They said their vows below a beautiful classic archway of tropical pink and orange flowers as the sun set down, with 15 family and friends from the United States beside them to watch their special moment unfold.

“The day was exactly what I had hoped for. My husband and I talked about how we couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful ceremony, for a more beautiful reception. Everything exceeded our expectations; we have so many great memories.”

Katie began preparations nine months ahead of the big day, utilizing the organization skills of a trained employee at La Mariposa. Her advice to others is to always have a planner, especially if you are based outside the country, and to ensure that legal help is available to give your marriage legitimacy back home. Additionally, Katie comments: “I recommend that you watch your budget carefully, investing in local products to save; Costa Rican weddings are not always as economical as one would expect.”

One great advantage that will reduce rising stress levels is the option of an in-country honeymoon. After whisking yourself away to our special Costa Rica, consider staying put for the celebratory holiday to come. Indeed, Katie was so excited to share her home in Costa Rica with her family that she allowed the entire troop to tag along for her honeymoon. They indulged in lazy days at the pool, rainforest canopy tours and afternoons in the sun at the National Park’s beaches.

With flights to Costa Rica costing the same or less than a cross-country trip, there is no excuse not to round up your closest friends and family and turn this once-in-a-lifetime event into something truly worth the memories. The intimate size, friendly people, tropical atmosphere, beautiful oceanfront sunsets and adventures to follow make for the perfect way to start your new life together.
