Surf Contest Website WSG2009.com in Hot Water Jun 20

isa-billabong-world-surfing-games-2009Recently, we took notice of a website wsg2009.com which is relatively new. I don’t imagine the site has much of a future since it is dedicated to the upcoming ISA Billabong World Surfing Games here in Costa Rica this August. The site has been under a coordinated attack by the Costa Rica surfing federation which is the organizer of the WSG 2009 and the ISA, which is the association that gives credence to the awards the games issue, along with the surfer rankings.

This site has been interested for some time in posting information about the surfing games but like the site wsg2009.com has not been able to find any new information about the games. Apparently, they are being asked to remove logos which does not seem like a big deal but according to the website the logos they are being accused of using are not anywhere on the site. We notice that no mention of the sites intention to provide information about the surfing event is recognized or appreciated. more…

Costa Rica is the preferred surf destination Jun 17

ict-officials-wine-dine-circuit-costa-rica

On and on and in ever increasing numbers to justify their existance ICT or the Costa Rica Tourism Institute, released more statistics today that says “Costa Rica is increasingly a surfing destination for international travellers seeking a surf vacation. ” Does anyone find this odd? Where have the “officials” at ICT been living? I know where, at the lavish tourism shows being wined and dined by somebody and in turn wining and dining someone else. In the perpetual international wine and dine circuit where nothing gets done but the appearance of being busy and on a tight schedule.

Lucky for most of the ethical people and “international travellers” we did not have to rely on ICT to tell us about Costa Rica’s surfing opportunities. Nor did Billabong who has sponsored their first ISA World Surfing Games scheduled to take place in Playa Hermos, Costa Rica this summer.  Imagine what Costa Rica would have turned into if not for the wine and dine circuit participants of ICT figuring out that Costa Rica is a surfing mecca. Maybe they want to get their hands on some of the cash that will be flowing for a period of ten days during the World Surfing Games or maybe they needed another reason to join a different wine and dine circuit. more…

Team Costa Rica steals the show at 2008 World Surfing Games May 24

When it all came down to the final point counts Team Costa Rica was knocked from 4th place to 5th place by Team France whom beat Costa Rica by 1 point. While many focused how the loss of the fourth position was salado which is tico slang for bad luck, others were shocked that the surfers from the small surfing town in Costa Rica made such a HUGE splash at this international event.

Many say it is Costa Rica’s time to share in the global spotlight of professional surfing competition but when it is all said and done, it was the local surfers who did it all. Jason Torres, Luis Vindas, Nataly Bernold, Gilbert Brown, Jairo Perez, and Lisbeth Vindas are the reasons why Costa Rica is now a power to be reckoned with in international surfing. All of these surfers are from Playa Jaco except for Gilbert who hails from Puerto Viejo. But if you live here you know Gilbert is no stranger to Jaco, his monthly visits here in Jaco shows that the surfers in Costa Rican are united and are a real team.

Unless you are a competition surfer, you do not know the mental aspects of this sport. It is important that individually and as a team that you don’t psyche yourself out even when you are competing against your friends. But when you are coming from a tiny town and going up against rich countries, big time surfers with BIG TIME sponsorship the mental aspect takes on a whole new burden to be dealt with. This mental game was one of the key focuses of coach Jose Urena.

Coach Jose Urena of the surfing Team Costa Rica talked about the mental aspects of competing against surfing stars during the 2008 Billabong World Surfing Games in Portugal. Coach Urena was quoted “It’s a matter of making them think that they can win against those guys… We’d make them believe in what skills they had and told them that sjust because they are from Costa Rica they shouldn’t underestimate themselves” More importantly, Team Costa Rica’s surfing coach said “As a matter of fact, they’ve got(surfing stars of the WCT & WQS) the same thing all the other have” Which is to say, they all have the same skills and just need to focus on that and not be intimidated.

You can be sure this blogger will continue to cover our local surfing champions with information and news about your favorite Costa Rican surfers. Don’t forget if you are visiting Costa Rica next year, Playa Jaco will be hosting the 2009 Billabong World Surfing Games in Playa Hermosa, not to be confused with Playa Hermosa in Guanacaste. Check back in this site for information about places to stay, other tidbits about this international event coming to sleept Jaco.

Places to surf in Jaco Costa Rica May 23

There are two oceanic coasts to surf in Costa Rica, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean. Most surfers how visit the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica surf near Puerto Viejo. On the Pacific Ocean, most surfers visiting Costa Rica surf in Jaco. Another area close to surfing in Jaco is called Playa Hermosa. Jaco is great because different areas of the beach have different levels of waves so beginners can surf on the south end and more advanced surfers go to the north end where the river mouths tend to offer much larger waves during the changing of tides.

Playa Hermosa will host the 2009 Billabong World Surfing Games in Costa Rica next year. Question arise locally about whether or not, Jaco and the central pacific is ready to host an international event. Issues of crime, emergency services, medical services, and basic government infrastructure are noted as lacking and need desperate attention to avoid chaos or cancellation by the contest organizers.

Leading the push for organization are groups such as the Central Pacific Chamber of Commerce and the National Costa Rican Surfer Association which was represented by local surfers Jason Torres, Nataly Bernold, and Luis Vendis in Portugal last month.
