Greetings everyone,

Starting next week, we will begin to post information in the form of Surf Tips when planning travel or planning a surf vacation for Costa Rica or for that matter anywhere in the world. Local and long time surf outfitter Chuck Herwig will begin sharing his experience with us weekly.

Chuck has a surf shop in Jaco, Costa Rica where surfers can get information ranging from places to stay in Costa Rica, best places to surf in Costa Rica, best surf instructors for beginners, and much more. Chuck has a website but do not let the low tech or simple site dissuade you from his knowledge.

People here in Jaco know when they need to find out information about anything related to surfing they go see Chuck. So check back or subscribe to the RSS Feed to begin learning from Chucks experience!

Top Costa Rican Surfer Video Compilation Jun 26

We were finally able to get our hands on a compilation video from Maluca Videos. Thanks to Romy for this video! We have all of the top surfers here and I apologize in advance if anyone was left out. This is the top people from the 2008-2009 surf competition season. There are many surf contests in Costa Rica but it is the CNS DayStar COPA contest that determines the national champion. So lets give it a go:

Gilbert Brown, Jason Torres, Andres Montes, Mauricio Umana, Diego Naranjo, Carlos Munoz, Jair Perez, Nataly Bernold, Lisbeth Vindas, Luis Vindas, Nino Myrie, Rodrigo Froilano, Jefferson Tascon, Jose Angel Mantarrita, Anderson Tascon, Yosimar Fuentes, Juan Carlos Naranjo are all in this video. This list is not in any particular order of point standings or when they are shown in the video. Congrats to all of these excellent Costa Rican surfers!!

Why did we not know Marisa Miller was here? Jun 19

Costa Rica has plenty of deserted beaches but one would think that with a top model coming here, one of the surfers would have heard about it and spread the news. I found this video by accident while getting Surf in Jaco ready to begin postings about our own Costa Rica champion surfer, Gilbert Brown. Enjoy the video and check back next week for stories and videos about Gilbert Brown.

ict-officials-wine-dine-circuit-costa-rica

On and on and in ever increasing numbers to justify their existance ICT or the Costa Rica Tourism Institute, released more statistics today that says “Costa Rica is increasingly a surfing destination for international travellers seeking a surf vacation. ” Does anyone find this odd? Where have the “officials” at ICT been living? I know where, at the lavish tourism shows being wined and dined by somebody and in turn wining and dining someone else. In the perpetual international wine and dine circuit where nothing gets done but the appearance of being busy and on a tight schedule.

Lucky for most of the ethical people and “international travellers” we did not have to rely on ICT to tell us about Costa Rica’s surfing opportunities. Nor did Billabong who has sponsored their first ISA World Surfing Games scheduled to take place in Playa Hermos, Costa Rica this summer.  Imagine what Costa Rica would have turned into if not for the wine and dine circuit participants of ICT figuring out that Costa Rica is a surfing mecca. Maybe they want to get their hands on some of the cash that will be flowing for a period of ten days during the World Surfing Games or maybe they needed another reason to join a different wine and dine circuit. more…

Surfing the “Green” Wave Jun 14

green-surfing-magazineThese days it is becoming chic and hip to be considered green in the surfing world. Today, many surfers, shapers, surf brands, and offical surf organizations either directly or indirectly support many green initiatives.

Living and surfing in Costa Rica, the original mecca of sustainability and green initiatives one cannot help but be conscious of the effects of irresponsible use of our natural resources. There are hundreds of organizations located in Costa Rica with a mission of ecological conservation.

Today, you can find upwards to 50 sites dedicated to “eco-surfboards” or surfer based environmental activisim groups. What makes this movement different from others is that it is truly global activism at its core.eco-surf-board-construction While surfings history is localized in the different countries, today surfers have the disposable income to travel the world seeking the ultimate waves. As a result, local surfers have teamed up with international surfers to fight for whatever issue they have. From “Save the Waves Coalition” to the “Surfrider Foundation” all have a common interest and that is surfing. If you know a surfer, one thing you can bet on is that they live and breathe for the waves. When you combine this committement to the sport and the issue at hand, you will have a formidible activist organization. more…
