Peru Surf Tour Day #3

Kent, to answer your question, I’ll have pics up as soon as I find
Internet that lasts more than 5 minutes. Maybe tomorrow? We are
traveling through the middle of nowhere (no wifi hotspots like WRSC)

I love Peru because when you surf here, instead of hoping for big
waves, you hope it isn’t too big to surf. We timed this trip
perfectly. The swell hit this morning, waves are head high plus at
protected spots, much bigger at the beach breaks and more exposed
points. The swell has just started to hit, it could get really big…

We’re driving to Chicama tonight, the equivalent of driving from San
Diego to San Francisco except for the barron desert expanse. Tomorrow
late morning we should be surfing the world’s longest wave. I love my
job :-)

Thanks to Joe Walsh and WRSC, THEY ROCK!!

I think I have the best job in the world Jun 01

I’m getting ready for Peru right now, packing my things. A late season southwest swell has formed and we’re expecting to surf Chicama, the LONGEST wave in the world. What does Chicama look like? The boards are all packed, there are 11 of us on this tour, 7 of us leaving from Costa Rica. Tomorrow we wake up at 330am, have a coffee, pack the boards on top, and drive 5 hours to San Jose to catch a flight to Lima.
I have the best job in the world. I am so lucky to call this work. From what I’ve seen over the years, when people make careers out of the things that they love, it normally ends up where they hate what they were initially passionate about. For me it is quite the opposite. I am more in love with surfing today than I was the day I set out to start Witch’s Rock Surf Camp. I’m so stoked to have gotten things at WRSC running to a point where I can branch off and offer these guided tours. I get to surf and provide for my family, its simply the best.
Expect a ton of pics and video of Peru this week, its going to be great.

Thanks to Joe Walsh and WRSC, THEY ROCK!!

Big Wave Surf Spot: Jaws on the North Shore of Maui Mar 18

big_waves_jaws-surf-in-jacoWhen the average person thinks of surfing they picture Hawaii in their head and the surf spots on Oahu.  These same average people when they hear Maui, they think of Hawaiian vacations. But Maui also has one of the best big wave surf spot called JAWS.  The big wave Jaws, is located on the North Shore of the island Maui and it the same wave where tow surfing was perfected since you cannot access this wave by paddling out. For newbie surfers, this wave was made famous by Laird Hamilton and he is often seen online in surfing photos of Jaws taming the beast and perfecting tow surfing techniques.

Big wave surfing is not for perfecting tight arc turns but for those people who want to tame the giant waves that the ocean creates. Jaws swells are influenced by storms as far away as Alaska so each set is different and has to be taken very seriously. Jaws waves are deadly if you drop at the wrong time or you wipe out and have not conditioned your lungs and mind to be calm during the ensuing “rinse cycle” of your life. There are few surfers in the world that have the ability to take on big wave surfing so it is an elite club but one that does not have longevity. Each year we hear of surfers who underestimated the wave or overestimated their ability and have died. more…

Magnum Martinez at Witchs Rock Costa Rica Feb 12

Word is that Magnum Martinez will be at the Witchs Rock Surf Camp on Friday the 13th!  I do not think Costa Ricans have any delusions about the day Friday the 13th but I sure hope all goes well for them.

It seems Joe Walsh is promoting the Magnum Martinez autograph session during a boozefest of Happy Hour specials from 5-9pm. For those of you who do not know about him, Magnum was born in Caracas Venezuela but according to Quiksilver he now hails out of Carlsbad, CA. His bio on the site reads “Magnum is a soulful, spiritual surfer from Venezuela who is an Alas Tour champ known for his powerful style. He’s well traveled and his intelligent, easy-going nature has made him a ton of friends around the world” Happy Hour at WRSC doesn’t sound like the ideal environment for autograph signing for this spiritual warrior.

magnum_martinez_headshot_detail_171x171Maybe we can persuade Magnum to come on down to Jaco and Hermosa so he can check out the diggs prior to the 2009 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games in Hermosa this August. Plus, I don’t think any host here will disrespect him by presenting him for autographs during a chemical intoxication session for this great athlete and surfer. In addition, this past weekends CNS Nosara Surf Contest winner Jairo Perez who is another spiritual warrior and a major up and coming star in the Latin surf world will be in attendance with Magnum Martinez according to the flyer posted on Joe Walshs’ blog.

Nosara, Costa Rica Surf National Contest Feb 02

Lisbeth Vindas 6 time CNS Champion

If you are a lover of surfing or visit Costa Rica to learn how to surf, you will not want to miss out on the next leg of the National Surf Circuit which will take place in Nosara which is located on the Nicoya penisula in Guanacaste.

But do not worry if you are in Jaco, a high speed boat shuttle operates out of the Los Suenos Marina which will get you there in one hour and back for dinner in Jaco.  The cost is around $30 each way and is not a bad deal when you consider the amount of time you will save and the ocean journey you embark on. Who knows you might get lucky and see a school of Dolphins which hang out offshore the central pacific coast of Costa Rica.

This next leg in the competition is third to last for the national surfers competing for the top seed in Costa Rica. After Nosara, the following two remaining legs will be in Santa Teresa and then the finals here in Playa Hermosa just outside Jaco and also the future location of the 2009 Billabong World Surfing Games.

Check back to see the latest roster standings for this coming weekend.
